XTool F1 Laser
The makerspace has an XTool F1 galvo laser funded by a small grant.
This Class 4 laser device contains two diode laser modules, a 10W 455nm blue laser and a 2W 1069nm infrared laser with a 4.25in (108mm) square cutting area. This laser is extremely fast and portable and can be used to engrave or cut organic materials and to mark metal. It is possible to use the laser horizontally or even upside down!
Under normal circumstances the laser uses a tinted shield to contain laser light and allow for operation under Class 1 conditions. See XTool's training and operating procedures for more detail. https://support.xtool.com/article/1194
Use without base plate
The laser base plate is removable. If using the laser in this way, or safety features of the enclosure are otherwise disabled, extreme care MUST be taken to consider the health and safety of the operator and any bystanders. Misuse, direct or indirect exposure to laser light can cause permanent injury including burns and loss of vision.
- Consider the time and location of your laser use: choose a side room or space without a window. Limit use to times when the space is empty or un-crowded.
- All operators, any spectators or bystanders MUST wear appropriate laser safety glasses. We have several pairs capable of blocking blue and infrared laser light emitted by the F1 (wavelengths and level of protection should be listed on lens).
- Implement signage and access control. This may include deploying a gate to block the hallway, placing a warning sign indicating that a class 4 laser is in use, and making laser safety glasses available.
